2020 Hyphae

Watch Hyphae and Hyphae, Behind the Scenes at The Center for Fine Print Research, UWE Bristol’s Youtube channel. Both videos were included at the annual Bristol Artists Books Event 2021(BABE) at Arnolfini, UK.

Hyphae  is about the elemental uncertainty of time and space. It was created during the Covid19 pandemic between Cárdenas and UK artist Bev Hayes.

Cárdenas, who has been practicing tai chi and meditation for years, directed and performed a choreography among trees resulting in an elliptical installation. Hayes captured the performer in her creative process and natural environment.

With Hyphae the artists imagine a world where all types of humans and nature forge their duality into a oneness, thereby living in harmony or mutualism. The transformation that happens to the space in the forest during the performance and experience of flow is a metaphor for transmutation and purification. The work suggests dichotomies of isolation and connection, visibility and invisibility.

A scene of Hyphae is also included in the film Choreography In Time And Space, created by Timespecific as a collective collaboration.
